Christian Aid

Banner Cross Methodist Church supports Christian Aid in a number of ways. Individual members support Christian Aid campaigns by taking action. If you want to get more involved in campaigning go to www.christianaid.org.uk/actnow to get started. Taking action by campaigning is an excellent way of helping the poor, marginalised and oppressed of the world. An e-mail from Christian Aid to one of our members shows how important it is. A team of volunteers delivers and collects envelopes during Christian Aid Week. Christian Aid Week takes place during May each year. A team of volunteers delivers and collects Christian Aid envelopes from houses in the district. We are always looking for volunteers for this job. If you need some gentle exercise and can spare three to four hours during Christian Aid Week please speak to Sean Ashton. Christian Aid Week this year is from 13th - 19th May, 2012. A number of our members take part in the annual sponsored May Day Walk in aid of Christian Aid. Individual members give regularly to Christian Aid. Christian Aid - an introduction (taken from the Christian Aid web site) We believe that every person deserves the chance of a full life - no one should be held back by poverty. We take a three-pronged approach to the problem of poverty, funding long-term development work, responding to emergencies, and challenging the unjust systems that make and keep people poor. We help people of all nationalities, of all faiths and none. We believe in giving people the power to find their own solutions to poverty. We work through more than 650 partners - local organisations - in around 50 countries. We focus our money and energy where they will have the greatest effect - for example, by challenging people in power to tackle issues that have a big impact on poor communities, such as climate change and international trade rules. We never give money to governments. We work directly with local organisations on the ground. We spend our money wisely. For each £1 given in 2007/08, 80p was used for direct charitable expenditure. The other 20p was spent on fundraising and running the organisation.
