People: Let us walk in the way of the Lord.

HYMN: “O Lord, Hear My Prayer”

Centering Prayer:

Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross so that he might draw the whole world to himself. Grant that we, who glory in this death for our salvation, may also glory in his call to take up our cross and follow him; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Meditation 2 – “That Huge ‘Why?’” from At the Foot of the Cross: A Meditation for Godd Friday for Several Voices. Wild Goose Publications: The Iona Community. www.ionabooks.com.

HYMN: “Oh to See the Dawn”

The Reproaches (Christ’s Lament Against His Faithless Church). The People’s response is sung.

Leader: O my people, O my Church, what have I done to you, or in what have I offended you? I led you forth from the land of
Egypt and delivered you by the waters of baptism, but you have prepared a cross for your Saviour.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I led you through the desert forty years and fed you with manna; I brought you through times of persecution and
renewal and gave you my Body, the bread of heaven; but you have prepared a cross for your Saviour.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I made you branches of my vineyard and gave you the water of salvation, but when I was thirsty you gave me vinegar and gall and pierced with a spear the side of your Saviour.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I went before you in a pillar of cloud, but you have led me to the judgment hall of Pilate. I brought you to a land of
freedom and prosperity, but you have scourged, mocked, and beaten your Saviour.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I gave you a royal scepter and the keys to the Kingdom, but you have given me a crown of thorns and threw away the keys. I raised you on high with great power, but you have hung your Saviour on the cross.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: My peace I gave, which the world cannot give, and washed your feet as a slave, but you draw the sword to strike in
your Saviour’s name and seek high places in the world’s kingdoms.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I sent the Spirit of truth to lead you, but you close your hearts to guidance. I accepted the Cup of Suffering and death for your sakes, but you scatter and deny and abandon your Saviour.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I called you to go and bring forth fruit, but you cast lots for my clothing. I prayed that you all may be one, but you scorn your Saviour by continuing to quarrel and divide.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I grafted you into the tree of my chosen people Israel, but you made them scapegoats for your own guilt. I made you
joint heirs with them of my covenants, but in your Saviour’s name you persecuted and murdered them.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Leader: I came to you as the least of your brothers and sister. I was hungry but you gave me no food, thirsty but you gave me no drink. I was a stranger but you did not welcome me, naked but you did not clothe me, sick and in prison but you did not visit your Saviour.

People: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

“Lord, Where Are You Now?” A Good Friday Prayer from Stages On the Way: Worship Resources for Lent, Holy Week and Easter. © 2002 Wild Goose Worship Group.

Leader: So there it is, the ugly shape of beautiful wood, rough hewn by human hands.

All: Lord, where are you now?

Leader: And there it is, a tight-shut tomb, a borrowed grave, sealed with stone and silence.

All: Lord, where are you now?

Leader: And there it is, your broken body, shrouded in linen, clothed in darkness.

All: Lord, where are you now?

Leader: And somewhere stand your people, crying though tired of crying, their eyes sore and bloodshot. They will not sleep tonight.

All: Lord, where are you now?

Leader: And out in the streets, the children have stopped their playing, the sound of music has gone sour, even the unlikely folk fidget and wonder.

All: Lord, where are you now?

Leader: And here are we, saying, ‘If only,’ murmuring, ‘Surely not,’ counting the cost for once of our carelessness and our lovelessness and our sin.

All: Lord, where are you now?

Leader: Trying so vainly to gain all, we’ve bartered you away in the transaction. We have lost the one who found us. With the Peters and Marys of all time, we wait, for only you can tell whether we are worth rising for.

All: Amen
